Blueberry muffins
We love muffins around here. Besides pancakes they are our favorite weekend breakfast. They are quick and easy to put together and there are almost endless varieties you can make just by switching out a few of the ingredients. I make banana, blueberry, chocolate chip, plain, oatmeal, cheese and apple cinnamon muffins just to name a few. One question I get asked more than any other is how I get my muffin tops nice and crunchy. It's not hard at all and you'll be doing this every time you make muffins from here on out. I know I do.
Chocolate muffins
Make up a batch of your favorite muffin batter and pour it into your muffin tin as usual. Now get out a little bowl of sugar and a spoon. Depending on what type of muffin you are making you many want to sprinkle one of the main ingredients on the top. For example, if I am using walnuts, pecans or almonds in my muffin batter, I sprinkle a few of those nuts on the top of each unbaked muffin. If I am making oatmeal muffins, I sprinkle a few oats on top. You get the idea.

Now grab your sugar bowl and spoon and sprinkle a little sugar on top of each muffin. You don't need a huge amount; a good pinch per muffin will do the trick. Then bake your muffins as usual. The sugar you sprinkled on top will melt and form a nice crunchy top on your muffins, just like those yummy gourmet muffins.

Give it a try and see if you don't end up with perfectly crunchy muffin tops every time. This works for pretty much any sweet muffin recipes. Ready to give it a try? Why not make one of my favorites: Banana Muffins. Or try these Oatmeal Muffins. They are delicious as well.
